Dental Biopsy

Dental Biopsy

A biopsy is a surgical procedure involving the removal of tissue from a lesion for examination. The tissue is generally examined under a microscope by a pathologist for diagnosis.

Inside the mouth there is typically a special type of skin (mucosa) that is smooth and soft pink in color. Deviations from this appearance is a warning signal for the pathological process. The most serious result from oral pathology is oral cancer.

When an entire lump or suspicious area is removed, the procedure is called an excisional biopsy. When only a sample of tissue is removed, the procedure is called an incisional biopsy or core biopsy. When a sample of tissue or fluid is removed with a needle, the procedure is called a needle aspiration biopsy. The most appropriate method of biopsy for a patient depends upon a variety of factors, including the size, location, appearance, and characteristics of the lesion.
