Dental Implants in Brooklyn, NY
Many people are surprised at how relatively easy dental implant surgery is. The reality is that most patients experience no pain during the surgery and very little discomfort afterward. Dental implants offer a strong and secure foundation for artificial replacement teeth. Through restoring your mouth with dental implants your new teeth will appear, operate, and feel like your natural teeth. A dental implant is an artificial tooth root replacement that is placed into the jaw bone and is used in prosthetic dentistry to support restorations that replace a tooth or group of teeth.
A single implant procedure involves an incision of the gum or gingiva to expose the jawbone and takes approximately an hour, sometimes longer. Multiple implants can be placed in a single surgical session that can take several hours. In simpler cases, implants can be placed and restored in a single surgery.
Implant surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia (if several implants are to be placed) or with local anesthesia (for simple cases) by oral surgeons. The most common treatment plan consists of several surgeries over a period of months, especially if bone augmentation (bone grafting) is needed to support implant placement.
Traditional dental implant surgery usually involves two surgical procedures placed several months apart. During the first phase, the implants are placed within the jawbone. Typically, patients will then wait 3 to 6 months in order to allow the implants to bond securely with the jawbone. Most patients can wear temporary dentures and eat a soft diet during this interim. During the second procedure, the implants will be uncovered and small posts will then be attached, that will serve as healing abutments until final replacement teeth are made by your restorative dentist. Since the implants supporting the restoration are integrated, which means they are biomechanically stable and strong, the patient is immediately able to masticate (chew) normally.
